Concert tickets go on sale today. That’s on sale, as in discounts of up to 25% for 8 million tickets to 700 shows, a rare rollback in an industry better known for escalating VIP prices than broad markdowns.
Entertainment goliath Live Nation is eliminating all service fees for reserved and lawn seats purchased in June for shows at its 50 amphitheaters. The “No Service Fee June” campaign covers 110 acts, including Tom Petty, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews Band, Brad Paisley, John Mayer, Green Day, Kings of Leon and Tim McGraw. (Details at livenation.com.)
“This is every show in every amphitheater,” says Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino. “Basically, our entire summer inventory.”
A narrower promotion last year sold nearly 1 million tickets. In surveys, about 60% of fans said dropped fees were the deciding factor in purchasing.
“Last year, we had some pushback from artists,” Rapino says. This year, “every artist said, ‘We’d love to help out.’ ”
Hopping on as mascots, the Jonas Brothers are offering fee-free tickets to their tour and promoting with a fan-club show Wednesday in Washington.
“With the tough economy, my brothers and I wanted to do something,” Nick Jonas says. “We have a close relationship with our fans, and this is one way to help them out.”
Growing up, he says, “our family financial situation wasn’t that great, and we’d have to refrain from going to concerts”.
His father/co-manager, Kevin Jonas Sr., adds: “I’ll speak as a dad. It can be difficult to buy one ticket, much less three or four. When you eliminate any fees, it makes it much more possible.”
Because 40% of amphitheater seats go unsold, a price cut benefits all parties, Rapino says: “If we can move a few extra seats, everyone’s happy.”

Joe Jonas nods to the cameras from inside his car as he leaves the gym with a friend (Martin Barlan from Disney Channel France) in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon (May 26).
The 20-year-old musician opened up to JJJ recently about Connect Three (in Camp Rock 2) becoming actual brothers.
Joe shared with us, “You know what I think that it is honestly? Is some of the viewers, there’s all ages that are watching, primarily the one that are watching the Disney Channel are a bit younger. I don’t think they can comprehend quite yet the fact that we’re not brothers on screen. They see us and think we’re just Jonas all the time no matter what we do. So I think sometimes it just works easier if we don’t say a last name.”
JJJ Note: In the first Camp Rock, you’ll remember that Jason, Nate and Shane were just friends who met at the camp. In Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam, they’re brothers.
ETA: How do they suddenly become friends from camp to actual brothers (besides the fact they are brothers in real life)? Lol.

May 25, 2010When “Jonas L.A.” launches June 20, fans will see that the Disney Channel series has matured — along with the superstar trio of brothers who give the show its name. “I think the evolution of who we are, growing up in general, is really cool,” says 22-year-old Kevin, who married wife Danielle last December.
“It really adds to our characters, and people can relate to it because they see our regular lives. Trying to keep us the same — still being in high school — wouldn’t have worked,” he notes, referring to their TV counterparts.
Nick, 17, who went out on a tour of his own last year with his The Administration band, adds that he and his brothers “looked at all the things we had coming up individually and as a group, and took the time to make sure our focus was still there and drive was still there” when it came to a second season of “Jonas.”
They’re pleased enough with the results that when asked whether they might even go on to a Season 3, Joe, 20, who famously dated Demi Lovato, answers, “We might. We don’t know yet. It depends on how the second season goes, I guess.”
We meet with the Jonases in their suite atop the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood, escorted in by none other than famous bodyguard Big Rob. There’s a panoramic view of Los Angeles on one end of the suite’s vast living room, and giant-screen monitors on the other. As we arrive, the brothers look like they’re having a blast playing NBA basketball with 11-year-old Disney Channel/Xbox 360 sweepstakes winner Gavin Liddell — and treating him, his mom, dad and little sister like esteemed guests.
The brothers make an entrance by helicopter on the rooftop of this very hotel in “Jonas L.A.,” they let us know. Everything’s been kicked up a few notches. “It’s pretty amazing. It’s taken on a life of its own,” says Kevin.
Joe notes that seeing the first episodes all put together “was really exciting.”
Their whole summer looks to be really exciting as well. With their “L.A. Baby” lead-off single from their forthcoming album out, they have their three-continent summer tour launching in July (with Lovato and other “Camp Rock” talent on the bill) — all part of the ramp up to their highly-anticipated “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” debuting Sept. 3 on the Disney Channel.
“We are really excited about the tour,” says Nick, “looking forward to getting out there and starting up again. We love touring, and when we’re out on the road, it just feels like home.”
“Whenever we go off and do individual projects or acting individually, I think it’s important to focus on the fact we are still a band, and that comes first,” Kevin adds, “and we always come back to this. We really want to pursue this as the main focus, and that’s really nice.”
DADDY’S HOME: Sam Jaeger, who plays stay-at-home dad Joel Graham on NBC’s so-very-good and so-very-renewed “Parenthood,” is using his hiatus to play stay-at-home dad for real. Jaeger and his wife have a 7-week-old son — who’s in his arms throughout our conversation — in addition to her 15-year-old daughter.
He already knows that Season 2 will crank up production mid-July, and that it will bring “a few more hiccups” in his character’s relationship with attorney wife Julia (Erika Christensen).
“We’ll see how the relationship changes if two people are not on the same page about their roles in the family,” he says. “Michael Chabon, in his book, ‘Manhood for Amateurs,’ talks about how he was at a grocery store, and someone told him what a great dad he was, just by watching him with his son. What an interesting exchange it was, and what would it take for a woman to get the same compliment? It doesn’t take much to be considered a great, or even a good father, the expectations unfortunately are so low,” notes Jaeger, as he gives his son a bottle. “I really do want to be a great father to my boy and my girl. It’s certainly not easy, but it’s one of those challenges that I’m really excited about in this life.”
The handsome Jaeger hopes the network shows some repeats of “Parenthood” episodes this summer since “a lot of people have just discovered the show. Hopefully, they’ll build on that. It’s interesting, the kind of outreach the show has. I was walking home and I heard, ‘Are you on ‘Parenthood?’ and it was a teenage girl who’d run after me to have her picture taken with me. The show casts a wide net; it’s not just for thirtysomething women.”
THE INDUSTRY EYE: With the Internet abuzz about Dwayne Johnson joining Vin Diesel and Paul Walker — caro pra chuchu! — for “Fast and Furious 5,” we get word that the film team is busy casting seven Brazilian characters. Actors have to be fluent in Portuguese.
Encouraging news for those who are feeling exhausted by TV scandal, sleaze and brainlessness. Casting notices have gone out for well-groomed, articulate, telegenic doctors, personal finance experts, relationship and lifestyle authorities — with undeniable credentials — to populate programs on OWN. That’s the Oprah Winfrey Network, you’ll recall, which debuts in January 2011.
Christian Slater and Eva Longoria Parker head up the low budget feature “Without Men.” Nice duty. It’s planned as a three-week shoot in scenic Santa Barbara, Calif.
Setlist wishlist: Songs we hope to hear when Paul McCartney visits the White House next week
By Chris RichardsPaul McCartney visits the White House next Tuesday to accept the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song — and an assortment of stars will be there to perform his tunes in tribute.
The program will air on WETA on July 28 and will include performances from Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, the Jonas Brothers, Dave Grohl, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock and Corinne Bailey Rae. (Jerry Seinfeld is also scheduled to appear, but hopefully won’t sing.)
I’ll be covering it for the Post, but since I won’t be able to shout out requests during the program without getting bounced by Secret Service, I’ve compiled a list of McCartney hits I hope-slash-predict each artist will perform at Tuesday’s event.
Check out my wishlist after the jump and let us know which songs you’d like to hear in the comments.
- Stevie Wonder, “We Can Work it Out”
Based on the rapport he’s established with the first family, Wonder will probably perform “Michelle.” But I’d love to hear him sing “We Can Work it Out,” the only (ONLY!) cover of a Beatles song that trumps the original.
- Jack White and Dave Grohl, “Helter Skelter”
The White Stripes frontman recently told MTV that Paul was his favorite Beatle and he particularly liked “The Hippy Hippy Shake.” But how great would it be if he tackled the darkest cut off the White Album? In the stately environs of the East Room? With the greatest drummer alive backing him up!? Oh man.
- Emmylou Harris, “Let It Be”
The prettiest voice in the building deserves to sing McCartney’s prettiest ballad.
- Corinne Bailey Rae, “Yesterday”
The second prettiest voice in the building deserves to sing McCartney’s second prettiest ballad.
- Herbie Hancock with Faith Hill, “Eleanor Rigby”
I’m anticipating at least one ill-fitting duet on Tuesday, but done right, Hancock and Hill could deliver a marvelous “Rigby.” Fingers crossed.
- The Jonas Brothers, “Band on the Run”
No brainer, right? Each JoBro gets a verse. Bring Herbie back for that weird synthesizer line in the second movement. [Insert Statler-Waldorfian zinger about how the Bros should be run out of town, here.]
- Elvis Costello, “Drive My Car”
The program is going to need tight, upbeat tunes and this one suits Costello well. The Jonas Brothers might try it, too. But are they even old enough to drive? I also predict that Seinfeld will use that same lame joke.
- Paul McCartney, “Hey Jude”
And for the grand finale: Macca and ensemble joined by the first family for some na-na-na-nas. This is going to happen. And it is going to be awesome.
Pop superstars help 11th annual ‘Family Day’ break all records
Published: May 21st, 6:36 AMMADISON – The Madison-based T.J. Martell Foundation’s “2010 Family Day” event Sunday, April 18, honoring the Jonas Brothers and the Jonas Group and Wright Entertainment Group management teams, was the most successful in the 11-year history of the event, breaking all previous “Family Day” records, raising more than $852,000 for cancer research and bringing in some 1,800 guests to the Roseland Ballroom in New York City for the city’s largest indoor carnival.
The event was chaired by Marcus Peterzell of Fathom Communications, and hosted by Radio Disney’s “Ernie D” and “Camp Rock” star Megan Martin, and featured performances by the Jonas Brothers, Honor Society, One Call and Anna Maria, as well as appearances by Jordin Sparks, Jon O’Shaughnessy and Sullee.
The Martell Foundation’s “Family Day” brings families together for a spectacular day of fun, safe indoor games and carnival activities to raise money for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research, with a “who’s who” of music and entertainment executives in attendance. In addition to the fun and games, “Family Day” also featured a silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind celebrity auction items.
This year’s “Family Day” honored the Jonas Brothers, and their management teams at the Jonas Group and Wright Entertainment Group, for their unyielding efforts in support of children’s causes around the world. Part of those efforts includes the Change for the Children Foundation, which works to raise awareness and funds to fight such diseases as diabetes, encourages young people to participate in volunteerism and “give back” to their local communities, and promotes tolerance and acceptance by supporting the Special Olympics.
‘A True Grand Slam’
According to Marcus Peterzell, “Family Day” chairman and last year’s co-honoree, “When we decided that for the first time we would honor an artist and their management team, our dream choice was the Jonas Brothers, as they tied into our ‘family’ theme and have given so much back to worthwhile causes. This was a true grand slam for the foundation.”
“We couldn’t be more honored to be part of this year’s ‘Family Day’ event for the T.J. Martell Foundation,” remarked Joe Jonas.
“It’s incredibly important to us that we do everything possible to raise money and awareness that will help children and families who suffer from leukemia, cancer and AIDS,” he said.
“The Jonas Brothers performed at our ‘Family Day’ in 2006, and it is so generous of them to come back and support our cause now that they are international stars,” raved Tony Martell of Madison, the founder and chairman of the T.J. Martell Foundation.
“The world is a better place thanks to people like them who are eager to help others in need,” Martell noted.
In Memory Of Son
Music industry executive Tony Martell and his colleagues founded the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research in 1975 in loving memory of Martell’s son, T.J. Martell, who died of leukemia that year at 21.
The foundation is dedicated to raising funds for innovative initial and ongoing research for improved treatments and cures for cancer and AIDS. The foundation has provided more than $240 million for research through a variety of events, including concerts, gala awards dinners, “Family Day” activities, golf tournaments, wine dinners, and walkathons, including a Madison walkathon each October.
Research facilities funded by the foundation include the T.J. Martell Memorial Laboratories at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City; the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif.; the Frances Williams Preston Laboratories at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn.; the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City; the Columbia-Presbyterian Cancer Center in New York City; the Massachusetts General Cancer Center in Boston; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, N.Y., and the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
This year marks the 35th anniversary for the T.J. Martell Foundation.
